Alternative Cancer Treatments - The Benefits of Using Bicarbonate of Soda

For many years now, there has existed an inexpensive alternative treatment for a variety of different types of cancers, although expensive modern-day treatments such as Chemotherapy, Immunotherapy, and Stereotactic Body Radiosurgery are still used by doctors. These conventional treatments are not always successful when used on a patient, as success usually depends on how widespread (staging) the cancer was at the time of diagnosis (when first detected).

But for as long as this alternative treatment has existed, it has equally been known of to the large pharmaceutical companies, although it has been rejected by them on the basis of not being economically viable. If this alternative treatment was commercially used to treat cancer, the large pharmaceutical companies that decide what cancer patients are treated with, would not only make no money out of it, but they would also lose billions of dollars every year on lost sales from existing medicines.

This alternative cancer treatment is with the use of nothing simpler than "aluminum free bicarbonate of soda," or more commonly known of in the household kitchen as "baking soda." It acts by instantly shifting the blood pH into the alkaline when taken orally, and has been used successfully in the treatment of different types of cancers by many desperate sufferers who have previously been given conventional treatments, and have had no success with them.

Bicarbonate of soda has been used successfully to treat mouth, stomach, intestinal, kidney, prostate, rectal, and oral cancers (if not infiltrated).

The method of use is to stir one teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda into a glass of water, once in the morning, and then again in the evening. Taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach one hour before eating, and then again in the evening one hour after last eating. After taking bicarbonate of soda, it is advisable to stand and gently walk about for several minutes to allow the gasses to be released from the intestine and the stomach by burping.

As a treatment, it can be taken over a prolonged period of time until all signs of the cancer have disappeared, and continued afterwards to prevent a recurrence.

However, in considering the use of bicarbonate of soda for the treatment for cancer, please be aware that although it has previously shown success by many of its users, it does not go without some degree of controversy. Most of this controversy comes mainly from the large pharmaceutical companies that dominate, and that have billions of dollars to lose if the use of bicarbonate of soda to treat cancer was to become public knowledge.

Different Types of Brain Tumors

Introduction:

Cancers of the brain are the consequence of malignancies of cells in the brain. Brain cancers can begin from primary brain cells, the cells that form other brain components (for example, membranes, blood vessels), or from the growth of cancer cells that develop in other body organs and that have propagated to the brain by the blood vessels.

Main Idea:

Brain tumors are all the malignancies within the neurological system and the skull. Brain tumors result from the uncontrolled and irregular cell division within the above mentioned body parts.

According to the WHO, classification of brain tumors is mainly based on the cause of cell and its behavior, from harmless, to dangerous, that is the most aggressive. The least dangerous malignancies are allocated Grade I while the most dangerous are allocated Grade IV.

The significant classification of brain tumors is reliant on the area of origin. There are two significant types of brain tumors:

i) Primary brain tumors
ii) Secondary brain tumors

PRIMARY BRAIN TUMORS:

Primary brain malignancies begin from the mind and can remain local or propagate to other areas of our bodies. These are further broken down into different types, based on the source from different brain areas.

TYPES OF PRIMARY BRAIN TUMORS:

1. Gliomas:

Gliomas start from the helpful brain cells. Gliomas are of different types. They include:
a) Oligodendrogkiomas - these can affect people of all ages and mainly begin from myelin-producing cells. They are rare and mostly do not propagate.
b) Ependymomas - This type of glioma mostly have impact on the children and the youth. Its basis is the ventricles lining.
c) Brain stem gliomas - These are found in the lower part of the brain. This part of the brain is very important as it controls the main body functions. Most of the brain control gliomas are of high quality and hence very dangerous.
d) Astrocytomas - They take place from the cells known as astrocytes. They can grow in any part of the vertebrae or the brain. In children, they create from cerebellum or the cerebrum.

2. Non Gliomas:

These occur from the non supportive cells. Various types include:
a) Pineal tumors - They grow from the pineal glands and can be easily removed from the brain. Some of them are very slow growing while others are fast growing.
b) Medulloblastomas - They start from the basic nerve cells. They also can grow in the cerebellum. They are also referred to as primitive neuroectodermal tumors.
c) Craniopharyngiomas - They originate from the pituitary glands. Most of them are harmless. In case they press hypothalamus gland because of overgrowth, various important features are lost and they become dangerous.
d) Schwannomas - They initiate from the schwan cells and generate myelin. Myelin protects auditory nerve cells.
e) Meningiomas - These are experienced by women of 30 to 50 age segment. They are harmless and begin from meninges.

SECONDARY BRAIN TUMORS:

The following cancers are the most common types that cause secondary tumors; lung, breast, kidney, colon and malignant melanoma.

Secondary brain tumors are those malignancies that create in different parts of the body and get into the mind. They are metastatic and get into the veins and the lymphatic system program. They then flow through the veins or/and the lymph vessels and get filed in the mind. From here they continue splitting and become obtrusive.

Secondary brain malignancies are difficult to treat. They are also the significant cause of intracranial cavity malignancies.

The following malignancies are the most typical types that cause secondary tumors:

• Dangerous cancer malignancy
• Colon
• Lung
• Renal
• Breast

Conclusion:

Brain cancer malignancy has a wide range of symptoms including convulsions, drowsiness, misunderstandings, and behavior changes. Not all brain malignancies are cancer, and harmless malignancies can outcome in similar signs. It is not always possible to find out the kind of brain tumor you have. This may be because the tumor is in a sensitive aspect of the mind that a physician is unable to operate on.

Getting Older Is Not About Eating Less, It Is About Enough Nutrition

I have been helping people find their best health for a while. Nutrition for the middle age and above is eating to feel good, and avoid genetic diseases, and definitely keep the belly fat to a minimum. Food that works for one does not work for another.

Bo, my friend, is getting complaints about not eating the meals that are being fixed for him. He is a Blood Type B, and has found out that by eliminating chicken from his diet, he has lessened his chronic fatigue. It is challenging to do this eating plan, because there is so much pressure from his peers. He found, it is best to keep quiet and go and find food that is "right" for him. It is also a challenge, as it is amazing how many products have ingredients in them that are not "good" for him. This is why I heartily recommend whole food. It is much easier to put a meal together this way. Bo is feeling better and his overall health is improved, his arthritis is greatly improved, and chronic fatigue is a thing of the past.

Sallie is my friend from college, who graduated as a Medical Technologist with me. She first heard about the "Eat for Your Blood-Type Diet" and was skeptical. I gave her the book, and she said nothing grabbed her attention. She gave the book away. Then in 2009 her daughter-in-law gave her another book. She had undergone allergy testing, and wheat, corn, and peanuts came up positive on the test. She was amazed when she looked under Type B in the book that wheat, corn, and peanuts were on the AVOID list. These for, Blood Type B, are especially responsible for weight gain, and are inhibitors of an efficient metabolism. She had to stop and think about her diet, and how she felt at 58. She found it interesting that she had always disliked tomatoes and beans, both on the avoid list. (There are beneficial, kidney, navy and lima beans for Blood Type B.) I personally, have some kind of beans EVERY DAY.

She had been on a gluten-free diet for about 2 years, and hadn't felt many changes, except her GI tract seemed to be better. The same wheat, corn, and peanuts also cause hypoglycemia in Blood Type B. She has had trouble with hypoglycemia all her life. She decided to first cut out the wheat, corn, and peanuts. She still eats yogurt, which had previously, made her hypoglycemic, and made sure she found brands with NO corn syrup. (in my 8 keys to basic health which have been expanded to 10, I recommend, that no one eat high fructose corn syrup). Within a couple of months, she noticed she wasn't hypoglycemic. She would get hungry, and not get the awful symptoms of hypoglycemia. She lost 5 pounds without trying, and was suddenly IMPRESSED!

Since she has been diligent about avoiding foods that cause hypoglycemia and weight gain. She also stays clear of foods on the avoid lists. She slowly added in the highly beneficial foods to her diet, and also now eats non-processed foods at all meals. She is eating more vegetables, which is hard for her. It takes time and effort to fix something we have not grown up with, so we can eat it. She now eats nuts and fruits too. As a Blood Type B she is challenged, finding some meats, and she now eats lamb and fish plus beef, buffalo, and turkey. She still makes chicken for her family even though it is an avoid. I assume she doesn't eat any.

The hardest and most challenging part of the diet is eliminating wheat and corn. She thought gluten-free was a challenge, and wheat, and/or corn are in everything. Gluten-free products usually contain corn flour or corn starch. She just found out that the gluten-free flour blend she was using contains gelatin, which is on her avoid list. She would try a bakery gluten-free bread, and later discover it has corn flour or buckwheat in it. She has done a lot of internet searches to find usable products. She found an almond flour cookbook that is fabulous, and uses ingredients she can use. Almond flour can also be used to produce low glycemic goodies.

Mexican, Italian and Chinese food contain wheat, corn, and tomatoes. Tomatoes are also on her avoid list. She says it makes eating out difficult. (Turkey would be most beneficial for her or buffalo burgers, and not too many restaurants serve this.)

She will try to eat small amounts of wheat or other avoidance food maybe twice a month. She doesn't notice any new symptoms unless she eats way too much of a certain food. She ate a whole wheat waffle just to see what would happen. That night she woke up with a migraine headache. She hadn't had a headache in years.

She has had blood work done regularly, and 6 months after starting the blood type diet, she had more tests run. She was surprised to see that her A1C levels, glucose, and insulin levels declined dramatically. In the past they had steadily risen. She now had proof her metabolism was more efficient. Her intestinal tract improved even more, and her allergies have almost, disappeared.

She has fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue with is common for Blood Type B. She is not sure the diet has/or will cure this, still she does feel better. (I hope she gets 100% better.) She was taking arginine for her heart, since Blood Type B's need this to help get rid of their stress factors, and support their heart. She Googled fibromyalgia, and found that it may be caused, or be a result of too much arginine. To get arginine naturally, turkey and spinach are good for starters.

Working to decrease stress is most important, as this can inflame our adrenals, and even make us hungrier. Knowing what foods benefit your system the most, can reduce one factor of stress. She sees a chiropractor and physical therapist, which have all contributed to better health.

She takes extra magnesium, and is on a licorice supplement from a naturopath. Her next step should probably be adding in a memory herb, like ginseng or ginkgo, and do the Membrane Fluidizer Cocktail in the morning.

Eating for your blood type is quite the journey. Her family thinks she is crazy. She will continue to follow this diet. This diet fixed her hypoglycemia, and is all the proof she needs, to know, that it works. She looks forward to more research results and hopefully improved health.

I, myself, am a Blood Type A. When I started this eating plan, my cholesterol was over 200 (about 225 and rising). I am concerned about heart disease, and type II diabetes, since high cholesterol and sugar, run in my mother's side, and fat bellies run in my father's side.

I would "try" things too, in essence I would sabotage my eating plan with potato chips and white rice. Hence, this process is a journey, and healing your colon, so it recognizes good food, and can process it effectively.

I eat totally the opposite of the Blood Type B's. Buffalo, Beef, Lamb are on my avoid list. Fish, (the cold water kind) are on my highly beneficial list, and Chicken and turkey are on my neutral list. I actually eat a fish every day. I eat canned salmon, canned tuna or grilled salmon. on top of a large green (romaine) salad, with beans. (Blood Type A beans, are Black eyed Pea, Black Beans and Pinto Beans)

I have managed to lower my cholesterol under 200 (187) and normalize my hdl's and ldl's (according to Sallie, out of balance ldl's especially L 3 and L 4 are what cause heart disease in women.) Very important to normalize those ldl's.

I even fixed my constipation problem, and take care to keep things running smoothly.

In my other articles I have described how eating too much fruit caused problems, and how finally something on my avoid list caught up with me. I have formatted my e-mails to give important health advice, and how I eat my fruits and vegetables to get some of each, and not cause digestive issues. I have since seen this way of combining protein and veggies, TWICE! When to eat fruits in Marilu Henner's book, and "The Truth about Abs". It works!!

My family thinks I am crazy too. I KNOW I feel better, and have found what my genetics are missing, so I can correct it with alternative sources. I will never quit eating this way.

Stomach Cancer Symptoms in Early and Late Stages

Stomach cancer is one of the most common types of the disease, and every year, death rates linked to it are increasing. Experts think that one of the biggest contributors to the rising death rate is the very indefinite symptoms associated with the disease. Since symptoms are very vague, many cases are often diagnosed too late, leading to delayed treatments. Thus, it is important for individuals to be aware of the symptoms of stomach cancer to facilitate timely treatment and increase the survival rate.

Stomach Cancer Symptoms in Early Stages

In the early stages, the most common symptoms include soreness of the upper abdomen, a burning sensation in the stomach, a sudden loss of weight, and an unexplained weakness.

Soreness in the upper abdomen without any obvious cause develop in about 70% of patients. Patients tend to feel it most when they are quiet and relaxed.

A vague aching pain characterized by a burning sensation in the stomach can also be a symptom. It is usually followed by abdominal distention and belching, especially after taking a meal. Some doctors may even mistakenly diagnose this as gastritis.

Many patients also experience a reduced appetite, which can lead to a sudden loss of weight. Some patients may experience poor appetite without pain, making this one of the most elusive symptoms that patients tend to ignore.

If the patient has been experiencing these symptoms without seeking treatment for them, they may eventually experience bleeding in the enteron, which will cause them to vomit blood or have black stool. At this point, patients usually become concerned and finally seek medical attention, but they will already have a significantly reduced chance of surviving.

Stomach Cancer Symptoms in Late Stages

As the disease progresses, the early symptoms also develop and become amplified, thus causing worse symptoms such as anemia, long-term upper abdomen pain, difficulty swallowing, regurgitation of food, gastric perforation, diarrhea, constipation, fever, and pain in the lower abdomen.

The most dangerous symptom, however, is when it begins causing damage to internal organs that are adjacent to the stomach. These include the pancreas, the liver, the colon, and so on. The cancer sometimes also travels all the way to the lymph nodes around the stomach or in nearby areas such as in the left supraclavicular region. Once the lymph nodes are affected, the disease can spread more easily. Eventually, the patient may develop jaundice, inflammation of the liver, and necrosis of the stomach.

The timely treatment of the disease can help improve patients' quality of life and can extend their life span. For early and accurate diagnosis, visit a specialized cancer hospital in China that has access to advanced and innovative treatments.

As a specialized cancer hospital in China, Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou is equipped with the most advanced treatment techniques. The hospital is highly reputable for its accurate diagnosis and early treatment of stomach cancer.

Brain Cancer Symptoms to Watch Out For

Brain cancer, also known as intracranial tumor, refers to a type of the disease caused by the growth of a tumor in the brain. There is another type of brain tumor caused by a tumor that originates from other parts of the body but metastases into the brain. Among all types of the disease, that of the brain can be hard to diagnose because its symptoms can very in every case and in every stage of the disease. Only a specialist from a cancer hospital can accurately and quickly diagnose the disease and identify the best course of treatment for each patient.

Confusing Brain Cancer Symptoms

The earliest of all symptoms is a headache. However, since people suffer from headaches frequently and headaches can be caused by several different factors, people who experience it as a symptom of the disease usually do not seek medical attention. What is unique, however, about a headache caused by the disease is when it occurs in the early hours of the morning, usually at 4 or 5 in the morning. The headache can awaken the patient even when he or she is in deep sleep. The deeper their sleep had been, the more severe the headache will be. Then gradually, the headache will disappear at around 8 or 9 in the morning as the person gets up and begins activity. If a series of continuous headaches follow this pattern, there is a possibility that there is an underlying disease.

The other symptom- vomiting - is also common and can be associated with several other factors. Usually vomiting is linked to gastric diseases, which can lead inexperienced doctors to diagnose the disease incorrectly. However, specialists are more equipped and experienced in identifying and differentiating brain cancer symptoms from symptoms of other diseases. Vomiting caused by an underlying disease is not accompanied by stomach upsets or distension, nausea, abdominal pain, or diarrhea. It also does not occur after a meal. Instead, it usually occurs suddenly and oftentimes, just after a headache passes. There is a scientific reason behind this: the increased intracranial pressure caused by the headache stimulates the vomiting centre of the medulla.

The Telltale Signs of the Disease

There are also some more telltale brain cancer symptoms that are easier to diagnose. However, these do not occur in all cases. These include abrupt twitching, single exophthalmos, deafness in one ear, lowered eye vision, diplopia, hemiplegia, difficulty swallowing, dizziness, and lack of body balance.

Specialists from a cancer hospital can help patients identify the best treatment plan for them and can help them manage their brain cancer symptoms.

For the right treatment plan and proper and effective management of brain cancer symptoms, visit a specialized cancer hospital like Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou.

Oral Cancer Facts - Know The Risks

Oral Cancer is Deadly
Over 8,000 people die annually from oral and pharyngeal cancer. As the deadliest form of head and neck cancer, it is important to know the facts and risk factors associated with this form of cancer.

Most people think that oral-pharyngeal cancer only affects people who smoke or use chewing tobacco. Nothing could be farther from the truth. In recent years, much of what we believed about risk factors for oral cancer has been shown to be only a part of the big picture.

HPV-Connection

One important factor to consider is that the same virus which has been shown to cause cervical cancer, the HPV-16 (human papilloma virus), also causes oral cancer. In fact, this form of cancer is showing up in patients who are younger and younger than the over 40 high risk age group previously defined.

While traditional lifestyle choices and risk factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption and environmental risks are still considered high risk factors, younger patients with no known lifestyle risks are being diagnosed with this disease. Patients who are known carriers of the HPV virus, for example, are encouraged to be screened annually.

Early Detection Saves Lives

Oral-pharyngeal cancer is so serious because it is often not detected until it has progressed to an advanced stage. Late detection of oral-pharyngeal cancer carries with it a 57% 5-year mortality rate. When detected in the very early stages, the chances of survival increase dramatically.

In recent years, the early detection of oral cancer and precancerous lesions in the mouth, pharynx and oral tissues has been improved dramatically through the integration of specialized examination tools. Your dentist will perform a visual and tactile oral cancer screening in addition to using one of these tools in order to ensure that you are protected.

Shining a Light on Oral Cancer

The Velscope light is one such tool which utilizes technology which is very similar to that which detects precancerous and cancerous cervical lesions. A specialized light is used to illuminate oral tissue during examination. Normal tissue appears green and possible abnormal tissue appears darkened. This new method of early detection has made it possible to prevent abnormal tissue from developing into cancer. Doctors performing a biopsy of abnormal tissue can visualize more precise lesion borders using this technology.

The Best Way to Prevent Cancer?

See your dentist regularly. Have an oral cancer screening performed annually. Do not ignore warning signs.

The Risk Factors Of Cancer

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. It is due to the abnormal growth of the cells in the body and can affect almost every part of the body. Common types of cancer include lung cancer, breast cancer, liver cancer or liver cirrhosis and many more. As much as possible, any person would want to avoid this life-taking disease because not only can it be physically and emotionally painful to accept by the victim, as well as their family and friends, but it can also be financially draining as cancer treatment can be very expensive. It would take more than some survival gear to be able to survive such a huge and complicated challenge like cancer in life.

There are a lot of risk factors for cancer. Here are some of the common ones:

a. Exposure to chemicals - Your body's exposure to chemicals is one of the biggest and most common risk factors as to how you can get cancer. For instance, if you smoke and drink a lot, don't expect to be as healthy as a horse. Cigarettes and alcoholic beverages contain so many chemicals that can cause lung and liver cancer, as well as other diseases.

b. Environmental - If you live in the city and there is a lot of pollution from vehicles, then you would be at risk for cancer. Like cigarettes and alcohol, fumes from cars and other vehicles contain toxic chemicals such as carbon monoxide, formaldehyde and benzene. Too much sun exposure can also cause cancer, skin cancer to be exact. Use some survival equipment when going out during the day time; you are risking yourself to cancer.

c. Genetics - Yes, cancer can be passed on from one generation to another. If any of your family has a history of cancer, immediately have yourself checked if you carry the cancer gene. Early detection is the key here.
d. Diet - If you keep on stuffing yourself with chemically-treated food like canned goods and instant noodles, then you are at risk for cancer. Most processed foods and ready to eat foods are loaded with preservatives and other chemicals.

These four are just some of the common risk factors of cancer. Now that you know them, try to use some survival tactics and learn how to avoid cancer. Be more cautious of your health and avoid cancer as much as you can.

Coming to Terms With Chemotherapy

When individuals receive a cancer diagnosis, they will very likely need to submit themselves to a round or two of chemotherapy. This method of treating cancer is a promising one, but it will leave most patients vulnerable to some side effects. If they prepare themselves well, they should be able to handle these effects with grace. Once they have determined the total duration of the chemotherapy itself, they can work with their doctors in developing a plan for combating any problems that may arise.

Because this particular process can leave the body fatigued for a number of weeks, men and women will want to concentrate on getting plenty of rest at night. Adequate rest restores the body's ability to fight the cancer itself, which will be important over the long run. As an added edge to fighting fatigue, patients should try to follow a wholesome diet that is rich in nutritious foods. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats are all important. Leafy greens, in particular, contain a diverse array of disease-fighting antioxidants. Spinach, kale, mustard greens, and cabbage may all be particularly helpful.

As is inevitable, most individuals will also experience hair loss during the process. This is often more disheartening to women than to men. There are, however, many good options. Wigs of all kinds are available, and many of them look perfectly elegant. Individuals might also choose to wear a hat from time to time. The important thing to remember is that this hair will grow back after the treatment. Chemotherapy patients who are concerned about this aspect of the process can meet with an oncologist for information on when and for how long the hair loss can be expected.

The side effects of chemotherapy may also extend to some digestive problems. Diarrhea may occur in some instances, and patients may feel nauseous for the better part of the day. There are certain medications that can help with this, and better nutrition can also help. If digestive problems persist or become worse through time, then patients should consult with a specialist. It is possible that the lining of the stomach or intestines may have become adversely affected and will thus need to be treated.

Ultimately, patients who are going through various chemical treatments to reduce the risk of cancer recurrence should recognize the many positive benefits of the procedure. Though some of the side effects may be unwelcome, this kind of treatment will give the patients the best possible chance of beating the disease. A specialized team of doctors will be with them every step of the way.

Beating Cancer With Natural Food That Supports Life

Today food is big business, farmers and manufactures will add anything that is legally allowed to enhance their product to maximise profit. This is typical of the food we are now eating. Supermarkets have taken over the supply of our food and most of what we eat is no longer fresh and has often been in storage for many months. What we are eating today is so processed that our meals are nutritional deprived.

To maintain our health and keep us free of diseases we have to feed every cell in our body and we do that with natural food that's been designed to support life. Food is our medicine we take daily to keep us healthy and disease free because it builds up our immune system and makes us resilient to all ailments from colds and the flu right through to heart disease and cancer.

Natural food is food in its natural state which has been grown in the ground and arrived in our shops directly from a farm and not via a factory. Natural food is full of vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals which the human body needs to maintain health. There are some foods that are classed as super foods or healing food because of their ability to fight diseases to help us regain our health.

There are three vitamins that are essential for anyone to stay free of cancer and they are vitamin A, C and E. There are many foods with these vitamins but are easily gained by eating fresh oranges, avocados, kiwi fruit and berries. It is well known that when a certain food is processed it looses many of the compounds that are helpful.

Other beneficial foods are tomatoes which contain lycopene and are helpful for both prostate and breast cancer patients. Watermelons are full of antioxidants which are known to prevent the formation of free radicals that causes cancer. Lettuces are full of fibre which we need and one of the best foods for a cancer patient is those from the cruciferous family which are broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, cabbage and spinach.

Other important foods are members of the onion family which include leeks, chives, shallots and especially garlic. Onions are literally packed with valuable compounds and are also full of antioxidants. The more pungent an onion tastes and smells the higher the antioxidant value. Onions are also rich in sulphur compounds and it has been regarded as a cancer fighting nutrient. High onion consumption is thought to be the main reason why there is a lower risk of bowel cancer.

Dietary antioxidants which we obtain from these foods are the foundation of cancer prevention and must be consumed on regular bases from a variety of fresh produce. Our western health care system does not have the answers to cancer with their toxic treatments but nature does through the many foods it produces.

Remember if you can eat food in its natural state that nobody has interfered with then you have a much better chance of beating cancer.

How To Act When Friends Become Gravely Ill

Friends are so important to our daily lives. They help us make the little things into big things. They listen. They laugh. They cry with us. So, how do you deal when someone close to you becomes gravely ill?

My husband was diagnosed with cancer in the late 80's and it was a devastating blow to us all. Soon our days were filled with doctors, hospitals, medicines and procedures. In short, our lives were not our own.

The everyday mundane things that you and I take for granted go by the wayside during these times. A homecooked meal, flowers, taking out the trash, laundry, etc. No one ever knows what to say or do during these times to help. So I thought I would share some things that were done for me that meant so much.

One Vietnam vet who I had never met rang my doorbell one morning. I just happened to be home for a short time to meet with the insurance man and my husband was in ICU in City of Hope. When I answered the door, he politely told me that he was there to mow the lawn and clean up the yard. I was not to do anything but he just wanted to let me know he was out there. It brought me to tears. I have never met this man but he knew my husband and figured this was a way to help. He was so right.

When people hear that someone is sick, I believe most of them truly want to help in some way, but don't know how. The worst thing for me was when people said,' If you need anything, please let me know.' Or 'Call me if you need anything'.

When you are in that situation, your mind is so full of things that must be done, let alone have time for rest, food or sleep. So those things become so special when someone thinks of them.

During that time I was working three jobs and I was pretty tired. A co-worker from another department called and said she was taking me to lunch. I was pleasantly surprised and when she picked me up she drove me to her home and she had a home cooked meal waiting for me. It was heavenly after all the vending machine and fast food I had been existing on.

Another friend who was working full time stopped by to visit and calmly told me she was staying overnight with me in the trailer where I was temporarily living. It was wonderful not to have to go in there alone, yet again and her presence made me feel so loved. To this day I am not sure she realizes how much that meant.

So, what are some other things you can do for someone in this situation? If you feel you can't make time to visit, you can send a card or note to cheer them. Tuck in a few local fast food gift certificates for those meals on the go. Offer to come by and pick up their car and get it washed. This was a luxury I never had time for.

If the caregiver has time slots where the sick person will be occupied getting a procedure, offer to take them to lunch, or simply go for a walk. If you know they are into crafting, a small craft kit to keep them occupied while they are sitting by the hospital bed is so appreciated. Or, if you don't want to intrude, simply drop off dinner. Put it in a pretty basket with some fresh fruit or homemade treat.

Other things we appreciated: salt and pepper packets or small shakers. Believe it or not, the hospital food often came without these items and food is pretty tasteless without them. They are often impossible to find after hours when the kitchen is closed. A TV guide. Word puzzles or magazines.

For those who will be in the hospital long-term, a pretty afghan or quilt to put around shoulders while in a wheelchair is wonderful and something as simple as colored pillowcases make the room look less hospital-ish. (Note: The caregiver will have to launder these themselves, as hospitals will only launder their own goods). Make sure they are new in the package in case immune systems are low and they are watching out for germs.

All in all, the most important thing is to let the person and the caregiver know that they are not alone; that you will keep them in your prayers and that you wish them good health as they fight the good fight... that's the best gift you could give.
