The physically handicapped persons may have some disability in their physique but this does not necessarily mean that they have inability to work. In a majority of cases they are able to accomplish tasks in the same way as normal-bodied persons. For this reason, it is wrong to discriminate against them on the basis of their physical deficiencies.

The type of job that once can do depends largely on the nature of their disability and the degree of the same. Persons with spinal injury alone or hearing problems only have different abilities from persons who have visual impairment. Even for one disability, there are varying degrees; blindness ranges from mild cases to severe ones and the same applies for the other disabilities.

A number of organizations have committed themselves to helping the disabled secure employment. These organizations have created extensive networks with potential employers and can do placements of different persons based on their evaluation. Some of them are also employers and take the persons directly. At the same time, most organizations that fall in this category are also support groups. They help the affected persons deal with the day-to-day challenges associated with their conditions.

Disabled persons should approach their potential employers with full confidence just like the non-disabled as long as they are qualified for the job. They should carry with them evidence of their previous experiences, academic documents and letters of recommendations from their previous work stations. In so doing the employer becomes confident and is not distracted by the handicap.

Using your disability as a way of getting sympathy is not advised. While some employers may employ you because they just want to help, this may work against you in future. Treating you differently from other job seekers or employees is one of the biggest causes for depression and lowered self-esteem. It is an act that will serve as a constant reminder that you are inferior to other people.

Disabled persons may be talented in areas such as song, dance, drama and other performing arts. In the event that one is unable to secure formal employment they can explore some of these areas. They need to take time and nurture these abilities so that they can use them as a way of making a living as well as simply having fun.

Another area that has been shown to be a good alternative is the area of sports. Although they have one form of physical limitation or the other, the disabled can still take part in a number of sports. Many of them can compete in a number of areas against the able-bodied persons and still triumph. A number of events that is just exclusive for the disabled have been created. This provides a means of earning an income as well as promoting physical, mental and social well-being.

Physically handicapped people need to maintain a positive attitude at all times. They need to work towards getting the best out of themselves based on their abilities. It is of no use getting preoccupied with the negative effects of their illness. On the contrary, emphasis should be placed on improvement of other areas of life such mental, emotional and spiritual health. Family support becomes very important in this case.
