HPV, also known as Human Papillomavirus, is a common infection that afflicts many people. In fact, at least half of the people who are sexually active during their life will contract it. Usually the infection will clear with time, but in cases which it does not, there are options for HPV treatment. Some high-risk strains can lead to anus, cervix or penis cancer.

This condition cannot be cured. With that said, it will typically go away with two years. If it does not, an individual should see a doctor because treatment is necessary. There are several options available when it comes to care.

HPV vaccines are being used more frequently now. They are employed as preventative care and thought to reduce the occurrence of this condition. Many treatment techniques used today are centered on the symptoms of the condition. Genital warts is a symptom common in low-risk cases. In high-risk strains, precancerous abnormalities are found.

A positive test result for this kind of infection does not mean that medical care will be needed immediately. In some cases, doctors will closely monitor the virus before issuing any treatment method. If one has a strain of virus that can cause cancer, the physician will recommended frequent pap tests to check for abnormalities.

When the virus has impacted the surrounding tissue, specific treatments are employed. HPV can lead to abnormalities in the cells that cause cancer of the cervix. Wait, conization, cryotherapy and LEEP are the most commonly applied treatments in these situations.

There is a high likelihood that the cells well change and heal by themselves and so playing the waiting game is a common method. Cryotherapy utilized liquid nitrogen in order to freeze cells that are deemed abnormal. Likewise, conization involves the removal of abnormalities. This procedure might also be called cone biopsy. Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure, or LEEP, is the process in which cells are removed through use of electrical current. In all available treatments, the goal is to eliminate all, or most, of the infected cells.

Many people have HPV. There are numerous strains of the virus that each have their set of symptoms and other problems. Usually the condition clears on its own after a few years. Vaccines are not available as preventative care and may be beneficial in lowering the rates of HPV. In high-risk situations, cancer may develop as a result of this virus. HPV treatment is available to those who do not see the infection clear on its own.
