Students Offering Their Assistance on Brain Cancer Research

By Rob Sutter

Sometimes all a good cause needs to be pushed to a higher level is the people behind it. It doesn't matter what age they may be because it seems like the drive people have is something that cannot be understated. For a group of high school students, brain cancer research seems to be helped in a great way. With so much money being raised in the name of research for this cause, I don't think that it's right to call this anything but a success.

According to an article posted on the CBS 5 AZ website, students that belong to the Saguaro High School have proposed the Students Supporting Brain Tumor Research walk-a-thon and the success has been, to say the least, great. This cause clearly has a good number of followers and everyone involved managed to raise a good deal of money. The walk-a-thon started in 2002 and since that point, the yearly event raised over $1.75 million. Consider that last year's event received $215,000 alone and you cannot deny that the event has seen a great deal of success.

The money that was earned because of these events went to many institutions that work within brain cancer research, which is the way that it should be. After all, the people working for these establishments need the money in order to further their work and if it's not seen, there's a risk of the work being shut down entirely. This is the kind of cause that does not deserve that kind of occurrence. Companies such as Voices Against Brain Cancer offer support for research as well.

The fact that this organization is run entirely by students, as the article says, should be something to note as well. It doesn't seem as though teachers and other members of faculty have had any part in this, apart from maybe the funding that has allowed it to be in activity since 2002. The students made this come about once three young people in the Paradise Valley School District were diagnosed during that time. These tumors are known to be the number one cause of death in teenagers.

Brain cancer research is done partially because these kinds of facts exist. People on the outside should be able to give their assistance on the matter as well in order for more funding to be seen. It's the only way that research can continue on and the students of the Paradise Valley School District understand this well. I can only hope that more people understand the importance of these events and offer their own time so that they can place their mark on this worthy cause.
