Important Facts That You Need To Know About the Condition Known as Trigeminal Neuralgia

By Leroy Smith

Trigeminal neuralgia is basically a condition that could only be described as neuropathic in nature. It is not a condition that can be missed by the person who has it, unlike other illnesses which can exist in their body without them knowing about it. The patient would instantly know about it because the pain is so excruciating. However, detecting the development of this disease from its early stages is not as easy or swift. But the condition itself, once it has started manifesting, is hard to ignore on account of its excruciating pain.

It is worth mentioning that trigeminal neuralgia goes by (or rather, is referred to by) several names. 'Tic doulourex' would be one of these names. Another name is prosopalgia. Yet another one is Fothergill's disease. The name of the condition, Trigeminal neuralgia, is derived from that part of the body that it affects, which is the trigeminal nerve. The presence of the prefix 'tri' in the condition's name implies something to do with the number 'three.' The tri in this case refers to the ophthalmic, maxillary and mandibular branches of the trigeminal nerve. Trigeminal neuralgia arises when one, two, or even all three of the branches are affected. Since the nerves are found on the face, that is where the pain manifests itself. Those include the eye region, the ear region, the nose region, the forehead, the jaws, the scalp or in a sizeable number of cases, the forehead.

If you compare the incidences of men and women having tic doulourex, it is noticeable how women are more prone to this condition. Both men and women can get this condition; it certainly does not choose specific genders. However, women tend to get it more than the males.

Another risk factor for this condition is the age of the person afflicted with it. The processes leading to the illness may start earlier on, but in most cases, the actual (painful) symptoms tend to start manifesting once the patients are beyond the age of 50. But this is not to say that it is inconceivable for younger people to suffer from this particular illness. There were even kids who are below 5 years old who have been diagnosed to have Trigeminal neuralgia. However, it is still an undeniable fact that older people, especially those who are more than 50 years old, experience the painful symptoms of Trigeminal neuralgia.

There are a number of things involved when you are going to treat Trigeminal neuralgia. The first thing that would have to be addressed is making the excruciating pain under our control. It would also involve putting neuropathy back on the right track, even if it something very difficult to do. But if you hope to have a successful time of correcting neuropathy, it would be better if the Trigeminal neuralgia has been diagnosed early. If the treatment has been performed earlier, the neuropathy correction would be more of a success. When treating Trigeminal neuralgia, it could be noted how most of them are treated through the use of drugs or medications. However, in some cases, patients prefer to go through surgery because the relief is more lasting.
